An Introduction To in-lite
An introduction to in-lite outdoor lighting, in conversation with Tori Walker from Landscape Plus.
However you would prefer to light your garden or outdoor space, we can all admit that it’s one of the most important factors when creating the right atmosphere or environment. To relax and unwind from the day, or perhaps you’re getting ready for a dinner party with friends and family. Whether in the summer months, when it stays lighter in the evenings or in the chillier seasons, where lighting is a necessity, as the evenings get dark and moodier.
Garden House Design is committed to only using the best quality and most advanced products. When the design team configure and plan your garden design, we use in-lite outdoor lighting. The versatility and range of the lighting allows the design team to create more personal designs. There are several benefits to designing in-lite into your garden or outdoor space. In conversation with Tori Walker, from Landscape Plus, we agreed that the most significant advantage is how adaptable the lights are to different areas of an outdoor space. Tori says, “the system is highly flexible, allowing your lighting scheme to change and grow alongside your garden as it matures. Thanks to easy connections, low voltage, and self-healing cable, fittings can be effortlessly moved and changed as planting grows and your garden evolves- making in-lite a future-proof outdoor lighting solution.”
Garden House Design were lucky enough to have displayed in-lite at this year's RHS Chelsea Flower show. In our secret garden we installed the (MINI) SWAY WALL onto our Millboard cladding. Beautifully highlighting the secret garden as the day turned to night. Not only were we able to install SWAY as fixtures to a wall, they fit perfectly at ground level integrated into our plants. “The sleek design highlights the natural beauty of your planting scheme, while ensuring there is no upward light spill,” says Tori. “Simply, push it into the ground amongst your planting for an effortless yet stunning effect."
Not only was it one of Garden House Design’s highlights seeing the BREEZE lighting in action, but the Landscape Plus team were thrilled to see the BREEZE installed into our planting. “It felt completely at home amongst the planting, adding a sense of life and movement to the lighting display that drew you in and made you want to linger.” The public were also mesmerised by the BREEZE lighting and its breathing effect, best described by Tori as "rhythmic breathing whilst casting a subtle and gentle glow”.
If you’re in the beginning stages of garden design and feeling like you have lots of space to fill, but have no real direction in terms of design, this is completely fine! Starting with nothing can be really useful to making sure that you’re designing everything purposefully. Talking with specialists and experts, like us, to make sure you’re getting the most out of your space, and designing a garden that flows and creates atmosphere and mood, will help to accentuate the planting, canopies or outdoor kitchens- at all points in the day.
To determine exactly the style you’re looking for, without jumping straight into which products you want, try using the FAF principle- Function Aesthetic Feature.
Firstly, Function, what is the lighting being used for in your outdoor space? Are you looking at getting some practical lighting, or for illuminating a garden feature or maybe planting? Once we have determined what the lighting is going to be used for, you can begin to get creative with the Aesthetics. This is not only thinking about the specific lighting you want, but what effects the lighting has, and the specific placement of the light. This could be colourings, dimming effects and what is being highlighted and from what angle. However, being completely unsure of all this is normal- that’s why the Garden House Design team are here, to make your life easier! It’s likely that you’ll want to illuminate a Feature within your garden or outdoor space. Upon an in-person survey, we can help you determine what’s best for your space and what is most visually impactful, for what you’re lighting. Whether that’s a canopy, a water feature, outdoor kitchens, or large planters.
As in-lite works on a low-voltage system, powered by a transformer that plugs into an outdoor domestic socket, there is no need for complex electrical installation. “Unlike solar or battery powered alternatives, running the system from a wired transformer ensures that light output is completely consistent and reliable, regardless of the weather or time of the year.”
“Solar lighting, while convenient in principle, is dependent on the amount of sunlight received throughout the day, meaning performance can be unpredictable-particularly throughout the autumn and winter months here in the UK.”
Amongst others, another advantage of using in-lite is once you have your garden design and after all lighting is installed, you can control all of the lighting by connecting it to the SMART-HUB app. This allows you to create routines and set timers, control separate zones independently within different areas of your garden. The built-in astronomical clock also means that your lights will adjust to the sunset and sunrise throughout the seasons, so that “your garden effortlessly comes to life each evening without any manual input.” If you are someone that loves to host and invite people round, or if you prefer a quiet night in, the SMART-HUB app is perfect. You can set the atmosphere or mood within seconds.
